Apple Spatial Audio vs Dolby Binaural

One of the most discussed and frustrating topics in the channel. Apple’s Spatial Audio and Dolby’s binaural rendering are two fundamentally different headphone processes, and the disconnect between them is the single biggest practical challenge in Atmos mixing.

Beds vs Objects

A critical workflow decision with significant translation implications. Matt Huber’s testing revealed that bed tracks translate far more consistently than objects across Dolby and Apple renderers.

If we switch to Objects, binaural sees virtually NO level change as you pan around, whereas Spatial still holds its consistent (significant) level changes. Panning in Atmos is fundamentally different from stereo — it affects volume and EQ, not just position.

Eg. if I pan some backing vocals to F/R -20, I’ll usually set the volume on them so that in the Binaural render they’re 1-2db too quiet, and on the Apple Spatial they’ll be +1-2db too loud. The perfect sweet spot compromise… there’s sadly just some straight up no go zones for me. Like I rarely ever place anything at F/R -50 with Height at +50 cos I know it’s going to be about 5db hotter on Apple Spatial.”

LFE Usage in Music

It only exists so that you can get effects loud enough… So why avoid it? Calibration levels vary wildly even in ‘properly’ calibrated spaces. That kick you sent to it might be 10 dB off from how you mixed it. The LFE channel can also be completely missing so now you get no kick. Most of the automatic downmixing that happens completely ignores the LFE.”

The LFE Temptation in Spatial

Matt Huber identified a real temptation: LFE content sounds tighter in Apple Spatial because it avoids Apple’s virtual room processing that adds a long decay to L/R low end. However, the inconsistent calibration of LFE/subs across playback systems makes this approach unreliable.
