Render in Place

Definition

Cubase’s equivalent of “commit” — renders audio with or without channel inserts, sends, and master effects to a new audio event on a new track, freeing CPU resources. Distinct from Bounce Selection (which renders the audio without processing) and Export Audio Mixdown (which creates a file on disk).

Context

Render in Place is part of Cubase’s three-tier rendering system:

  • Render in Place — renders with selected processing (inserts, sends, or both) to a new track; the most flexible option
  • Bounce Selection — renders raw audio without any processing; useful for consolidating edits
  • Export Audio Mixdown — renders to a file on disk with full channel path; used for final delivery

The distinction between these three options is a frequent source of confusion for new Cubase users. Community members recommend using Render in Place for committing CPU-heavy plugins during mixing, and Export Audio Mixdown for final stems and deliverables.
